Heart Burns

close up of tea light candle against black background
Watching sunsets
forgiving self for rushing it
for letting this get the best of me
by cramming a to do list
into the schedule,
my growth mistake
let me hold this door for you
in return for a gift you sent
when smiling,
that sat with me for weeks
so much that
I parlayed with songs on repeat
making love for you
on short notice
a bit of hurt here
a little happiness there
call it poetry
wrote breath for you to intake
hoping you’ll enjoy the air
and if I could just
get
this
right
…where…
I know this fits
our feet in soft grass
imprints to remember
the trip to a place shaped
from abandonment
pull up a chair and sit
with the alchemist
cherish the chef’s kiss
as the sun sets
enjoy this nervousness
in my stomach
an experience
worth the pleasure gained
from pain.
